From Library Journal First published in 1913, this catalogue raisonn of Odilon Redon's prints has long been the standard work on the subject. A master printmaker, especially in lithography, Redon felt that the color black best expressed his ideas of the obscure and mysterious world of the imagination. This current edition of the 1913 catalog preserves Mellerio's original French text yet incorporates scholarship subsequent to the original edition. Included are essays by Daniel Catton Rich and Harold Joachim, two curators at the Art Institute of Chicago, the museum with the most complete collection of Redon's graphic work in the United States (purchased from Redon's widow in 1920). In 1929, Rich and William MacKee, also of the Art Institute, published a catalog of prints and states of prints by Redon that were unknown to Mellerio but are included in this edition. Also included are excerpts from Redon's book To Myself, as well as an 1884 letter written by the artist. Notes on the prints are given in the original French and in English, as are titles for the works listed in the index. All prints are reproduced in black and white.
